I find that Mozilla mail works best for new email users.
1. It has a SPAM filter that learns what is SPAM and gets better the more you use it.
2. It can block pop-ups automatically, reducing the chance you even see SPAM based businesses.
3. It turns off remote images and plug-ins in attachments and newsgroups. This is a popular way Spammers get your email address, and this feature prevents your email address from being harvested.
4. It isn't affected by the same viruses as Outlook Express, thus making your computer more secure.
5. It is freely available for download and use.
If you are computer saavy you can download a list of DNS entries of known spammers into your computers HOSTS file. This list redirects the hypertext link embedded in web pages you browse to the localhost, which will make the ads and images show up blank.
