What is spyware?
Spyware is technology that gathers information about a person or organization without their knowledge. Online spyware (also called spybot or tracking software) is programming in someone's computer that secretly gathers information about the user and relays it to advertisers or other interested parties.
How does SpyWare get in my computer?
Spyware enters a computer as a software virus or via a new program installation. Many "free" software programs contain spyware. Spyware typically installs without the user's consent, as a drive-by download, or as the result of clicking some option in a deceptive pop-up window.
Are all data collecting programs spyware?
No. Not if you are aware and understand and accept that specific data is being collected and with whom it is being shared.
Are cookies spyware?
A cookie is information that a Web site puts on your computer hard disk so that it can remember something about you at a later time...typically, a cookie records your preferences when using a particular site. The use of Cookies is generallynot hidden from users and you may choose to block them. Though not typical, a Cookie that you do not know about might be spyware.
